Itinerary description
A short, steep trail with a lot of slope exposure. This trail has one of the best spring wildflower displays in the area. There used to be only enough parking spaces for 4 cars at the trailhead. Now there is enough room for maybe 8. This winter the state plowed a few more turnouts about a quarter mile down for the trailhead, so there is even more room to park.
The trail used to be narrow with a downward slope. It is still pretty narrow in places, but recent work for the first mile of this trail has widened it and made the trailbed level. However, there are still alot of loose pebbles on the trail and a few spot steep enough to skid out on. Therefore, I advise the use of hiking poles on the trail.
There is a new trail being cut that goes uphill at the junction. I followed it for a few hundred feet, but it is still mostly a deer trail. At any rate, there may be a much longer trail available in the future. At the junction there is a path that will take you down to the American River.
Wildflowers are beautiful in spring. However, take care. There is a great deal of poison oak near the trail in many place. Step carefully. In many places a fall will take you down the mountain with nothing to stop you until you are at the river.
