Itinerary description
This hike is described by the book "Afoot and Afield in San Diego County". It is hike 3 of area M-8. You can see in the pictures how the area was affected by the wildfires of the previous decade. In some you can see how the area is recovering with new foliage which is gobbling up the gnarly looking trees. The hike starts at mile marker 27.5 of the sunrise highway which can be accessed from interstate 8 running through southern CA. The overall elevation change was minimal and it seemed that there was as much downhill walking as there was uphill walking throughout. There isn't much shade on this hike though so on a sunny day the heat will wear you out. The picnic area that we stopped at about halfway was a good break and provided plenty of shade. In some of the pictures you'll see the border to the anza borrego desert. It is pretty neat to see how the wilderness changes so abruptly.
