Itinerary description

This 2-day route is the oldest in Latin America, where you can visit the archaeological site of Wiñaywayna and the Sun Gate, which is the entrance to the Inca citadel and ends at Machu Picchu.

The route starts at kilometer 104, which is reached by train from Ollantaytambo. From here, it is 3 hours to the archaeological site of Wiñaywayna which is at 2600 meters altitude. In this area you will probably suffer some of the symptoms of altitude sickness, so it is best that you go to a pharmacy before and get used to it the days before starting the route.

After the archaeological site, we continue to the Sun Gate, the access to the sacred site of Machu Picchu. From there you will take a bus down to Aguas Calientes where you will spend the night. There you will have time to see the town and walk around.

The next day you can walk or take a bus up to Machu Picchu and once inside you have 2 hours of guided tour, but then you can see it on your own.

It is a very worthwhile route.
