Itinerary description
The Inca Trail in 4 days is the complete version of the classic route.
The route starts from Piscacaucho at kilometer 82, which is at 2700 meters above sea level and where they take you from Cusco. The first day's hike is 8 km and after walking along the Urabamba River you arrive in Miskay. From there, there is an ascent to the highest part of the mountain to see the Inca city of Llactapata. The route continues through the valley created by the Kusicacha River until you reach the Wayllabamba camp. This whole section is done in about 5 hours.
The second day you walk about 12 kilometers in 8 hours. It is the hardest part of the whole route because most of it is uphill. In addition, you pass through Abra Warmiwañusca at 4200 meters altitude. After crossing a forest, you reach the Pacaymayo valley at 3600 meters altitude, where you spend the night.
The third day's route is 16 kilometers long and can be done in 12 hours and although it is longer than the previous day, it is easier. From Pacaymayo you climb to the second pass of Abra Runkurakay and then there is a descent to Yanacocha. After crossing a forest, you arrive at the Sayacmarca archaeological complex. The route continues through an Inca tunnel until you reach Phuyupatamarca and is the highest point of the mountain. Then there is a descent down stone steps until you reach Wiñaywayna where you spend the night.
The last day is the arrival to Machu Picchu. After walking for an hour on a stone path you arrive directly to the Inca ruins. You have a 2 hour guided tour of Machu Picchu and then you can enjoy it on your own. The walking route ends here, but at the end of the visit you go by bus to Aguas Calientes and later by train back to Cuzco.
