Itinerary description
We found this lovely panoramic walk on the following website:
https://www.ilmenau.de/2764-0-Rund+um+den+Kickelhahn.html
This circular walk around the Kickelhahn starts at the Festhalle. You can park your car for free there.
The track gradually climbs to the Steinbachtal and then up to the Kleiner Hermannstein. This wonderfully shaded track leads you past the Kleinen Hermannstein and wiil give you views of the district of Manebach in the valley, before you reach the source of Sophia.
At the source the hiking trail merges with the Goethewanderweg and leads up to the Grosser Hermannstein (755 m.) and on to the Goethehaus just under the top of the Kickelhahn.
The top of the Kickelhahn (861m.) will give you an enormous view to the west and there are many benches to sit on and picknick tables that can be used.
There is also an observation tower which is currently not accessible due to renovation work. There is also a restaurant.
Going down you will pass some beautiful view points and after about one kilometre you will arrive at the Museum Jagdhaus Gabelbach.
After that the straight track is called the Buchenallee and leads to the Scheffeldenkmal.
Here you have to cross the forest road and continue on the other side of the Gabelbach.
Where the track reaches Ilmenau we left the signposted trail and walked trough the centre of Ilmenau before going back to the Festhalle.
