Itinerary description
What should be a fairly easy 6.4km trail that turned in to a bit of a nightmare!
Walking alongside the lake through the camping areas is lovely. Then up a bit of tar to the entrance to the forest, the official start of the trail.
Through the forest is lovely. We took a long time looking at, and trying to see, the many, many birds.
But.....
There is a sign as you enter the forest, stating clearly that the Lakeshore part of the trail is submerged (photo n°4) and you should just go out and back! Take notice of this and turn back when you get to the first rickety bridge (photo n°7)
We didn't (05/11/22) and that was a huge mistake.
After this point there are parts of the trail completely missing, taken away by landslides. And parts have been washed away by the rising waters of the lake. To get round these obstacles you have to scramble up and down through mud and thicket. For the young and fit, possibly not a problem. For an extremely unfit, overweight, septagentarian it was a struggle - not helped by a thunderstorm as we negotiated the most difficult bit. And we saw fresh crocodile spoor in the mud...
I will be taking heed of official notices from now on.

Do take notice of this sign. The trail is absolutely fine through the forest, but from the (broken) boardwalk/bridge onwards it gets pretty complicated. Parts of the trail are still there, as are the marker posts, but erosion and landslides have taken away large tracts of the trail, so you are scrambling up and down through the thicket and roots close to the water's edge. For an unfit, overweight, septagentarian it was not easy.
