Itinerary description

The history of the town of Idstein dates back to 1102. It was mentioned for the first time as "Etichenstein" and received town rights in 1287. The town is definitely worth a visit, with the old witches' tower and its medieval town center with many half-timbered houses. The oldest preserved residential building dates back to 1410.

One of Idstein's most striking half-timbered houses is the "Killingerhaus" built in 1615 with its turquoise green paint, the beautifully designed oriel and the detailed carvings. Nowadays the tourist information is located here, and you should definitely go in and ask for the key to the "Hexenturm" (Witches' Tower). The Killingerhaus also houses the town museum. Here you can learn about the 900-year history of the city through numerous exhibits.

Next to the Leaning House is the Red Town Hall and the 12th century fortress. The "Kanzleitor" represents the transition between the old town and the fortress and castle.

Idstein Castle

The Renaissance-style Idstein Castle was built between 1614 and 1634 by the Idstein architects Jost and Heinrich Heer (Höer). Parts of the former outer castle were used as a basis for the new building. The castle stands on a raised plateau, which was separated from the main or upper castle by a moat (with a castle bridge).  Since 1946 it has been housing a secondary school.
