Itinerary description
On this segment the trail goes down the valley alongside the South Fork of the Payette. It’s a pleasant hike on good trails. The only crossing that might be a little challenging is the one of the Baron Creek if early in season. From the Grandjean Trailhead there’s a short walk down to the Sawtooth Lodge (nice place - lunch between noon and 2pm, wonderful huckleberry milkshakes!) From Grandjean the trail ascends for quite a while which will give you good views back down to the valley. As soon as you’re on the top the trail drops you down into the valley leading to the Stanley Lake.
