IBLEI - Noto Antica Cava Carosello Laghetto Carosello Lake Canyon (Sept 9th 2020)

Noto così come oggi la conosciamo, rappresenta la città “nuova”, quella costruita dopo il terremoto del 1693.L’antico centro abitato di Noto, conosciuto come Noto Antica, fu un centro di rilevante importanza. Municipium sotto il dominio dei Romani, Capovalle dalla dominazione araba in poi e fregiata del titolo di civitas ingegnosa da Ferdinando il Cattolico, fu uno dei principali centri culturali militari ed economici della Sicilia sud-orientale fra il XIV e il XVI secolo.
La citta di Noto, comunemente denominata Noto Antica, sorgeva 8 km più a nord dell’attuale città, sul monte Alveria.
La leggenda narra che Neaton, nome di Noto antica, venne trasferita dall’altura della Mendola al vicino monte Alveria, dal condottiero siculo Ducezio, che nel corso del V secolo, avrebbe difeso la città dall’attacco dei greci. Divenne così colonia siracusana durante il regno di Gerone II e nel 214 a.C., fu riconosciuta come città alleata dai Romani, che concessero ai netini un proprio senato, tanto che tutt’oggi in alcuni palazzi è presente la scritta SPQN (Senatus PopolosQue Netinum).
Il percorso qui presentato parte appunto dalle mura di cinta della citta' antica e dopo un breve percorso piano che attraversa alcune rovine della citta' (fra cui ad esempio Palazzo Landolina), gira a destra ed inizia la discesa su scalinata di roccia al fondo di Cava Carosello (discesa suggestiva, ma triste per noi, vista la distruzione della vegetazione prima rigogliosa a causa di un evidentemente esteso e recente incendio. La discesa continua fino ad arrivare al fondo del Canyon e percorre lungo il fiume fino ad un laghetto di acqua limpidissima dove, tempo permettendo, ci si puo' tuffare in sicurezza. Il percorso ad anello risale dunque lungo una carrabile in cemento molto ampia, ma in chiara pendenza e senza l'ombra di qualche albero fino a rientrare alle macchine. Prima del rientro, se invece di deviare a destra per le cinta murarie si curca a sinistra (indicazioni per l'Eremo di S. Maria della Provvidenza) si raggiunge dopo un paio di Km di sterrato in piano l'eremo abbandonato ma affascinante. Dietro l'eremo si trova un bel punto panoramico sul versante sud di cava Carosello.

Known as we know it today, it represents the "new" city, the one built after the earthquake of 1693. The ancient town of Noto, known as Noto Antica, was a center of considerable importance. Municipium under the dominion of the Romans, Capovalle from the Arab domination onwards and adorned with the title of ingenious civitas by Ferdinand the Catholic, it was one of the main military and economic cultural centers of south-eastern Sicily between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries.
The city of Noto, commonly known as Noto Antica, stood 8 km further north of the present city, on Mount Alveria.
Legend has it that Neaton, the name of ancient Noto, was transferred from the hill of Mendola to nearby Mount Alveria, by the Sicilian leader Ducezio, who during the fifth century would have defended the city from the attack of the Greeks. It thus became a Syracusan colony during the reign of Gerone II and in 214 BC, it was recognized as an allied city by the Romans, who granted the Noto their own senate, so much so that the inscription SPQN (Senatus PopolosQue Netinum) is still present in some palaces.
The route presented here starts from the walls of the ancient city and after a short flat path that crosses some ruins of the city (including for example Palazzo Landolina), turns right and begins the descent on a rock staircase to the bottom of Cava Carosello (suggestive descent, but sad for us, given the destruction of the previously luxuriant vegetation due to an evidently extensive and recent fire. The descent continues until you reach the bottom of the Canyon and runs along the river to a lake of very clear water where, weather permitting, you can dive safely. The circular route therefore goes up along a very wide concrete driveway, but with a clear slope and without the shadow of any trees, until it returns to the cars. Before returning, if instead of turning right for the city walls, turn left (signs for the hermitage of S. Maria della Provvidenza) and after a couple of kilometers of flat dirt road you will reach the abandoned hermitage but fascinating. Behind the hermitage there is a nice viewpoint on the southern slope of the Carosello quarry.
