IBLEI , Cava Grande Cassibile Laghetto Cassibile Sentiero Carrubella A e B (Sept 11th 2020)

La riserva naturale di Cavagrande è stata istituita nel 1990. Si trova tra i comuni di Avola, Noto e Siracusa e si estende per 2700 ettari, incorniciata dai monti Iblei. E’ attraversata dal fiume Cassibile, l’antico Kakyparis greco, che le dà il nome e che l’ha creata nel corso dei millenni scavando profondi canyon che toccano il massimo di 507 mt nella zona del Belvedere di Avola Antica. Nel fondovalle si è formato un sistema di piccole cascate e laghetti, dall’acqua fresca e limpida.
I primi abitanti di Cava Grande furono i Sicani, che vi si stabilirono con le loro abitazioni rupestri, dette Dieri, di cui rinomata è la “Grotta dei Briganti”, un’ampia grotta semicircolare naturale, che fu utilizzata anche in epoca bizantina ed araba. Sono ancora visibili due villaggi, uno settentrionale e uno meridionale, il primo dei quali risale ai secoli XI-X a.C. in cui si trova una necropoli con centinaia di tombe a grotticella e ipogei paleocristiani scavati nelle pareti. Inoltre la foce del Cassibile è un luogo storico, infatti, secondo Tucidide fu il luogo in cui il capitano Demostene nel 413 a.C con 6000 ateniesi si arrese alla città di Siracusa.
Parcheggiata la macchina (parcheggio a pagamento: a Settembre 2020 abbiamo pagato 3.50 Euro per l'intera giornata) il sentiero attraversa una masseria abbastanza disordinata dove si allevano principalmente capre e pecore. superata il breve tratto comune, il sentiero permette di fare un percorso circolare. Ci sono due ingressi ben demarcati da segnaletica: il sentiero A (a Sinistra) e il sentiero B (A destra). Chi vuole fare un giro breve della riserva andrà a destra scendendo gradualmente nel canyon (Il B e' un percorso piu' breve ma anche piu' ripido, piu' esposto e meno ombroso). Chi, invece, vuole fare il giro completo del sentiero, al bivio proseguirà dritto per altri 5-600 metri. In fondo un cancelletto in legno e un cartello segnalano l’inizio del Sentiero A e della discesa nel canyon attraverso una bellissima scalinata intagliata nella roccia, questa e' stata la nostra scelta per la prima parte dell'escursione. Dopo la scalinata, Il Sentiero A supera una vecchia diga (la diga Prisa) non piu' in uso e prosegue a destra su un percorso in terra battuta, piano, non largo ma abbastanza comodo, che affianca il fiume e corre sotto gli alberi, quasi completamente all'ombra fresca di questi, particolarmente apprezzabile d'estate. Arrivati alle vasche che il fiume ha creato nella roccia, noi siamo rientrati seguento il sentiero B (a ritroso dunque), come detto piu' esposto, assolato, e ripido (nulla di difficile comunque), ma con scenari molto belli, ed un percorso che si affaccia dall'alto sulle pozze del Cassibile. Sempre seguendo il sentiero B, poco prima dell'ultimo tratto (vedi Waypoint riportato sulla traccia GPS) una deviazione a sinistra su sentiero ben segnato permette di raggiungere la Scala Cruci ed il laghetti principali. Il sentiero e' aperto, ma un cartello avverte a caratteri cubitali del pericolo di frane e di come il percorso Scala Cruci sia al momento chiuso e non mantenuto dalla forestale (chiusura risalente all'Incendio del 2014). Superata questa deviazione si affronta l'ultimo tratto della salita, prima di rientrare alla sezione comune del percorso e quindi alla macchina.

The first inhabitants of Cava Grande were the Sicani, who settled there with their cave dwellings, called Dieri, of which the "Grotta dei Briganti" is renowned, a large natural semicircular cave, which was also used in the Byzantine and Arab times . Two villages are still visible, one northern and one southern, the first of which dates back to the 11th-10th centuries BC. where there is a necropolis with hundreds of cave tombs and paleochristian hypogea dug into the walls. Furthermore, the mouth of the Cassibile is a historical place, in fact, according to Thucydides it was the place where the captain Demosthenes in 413 BC with 6000 Athenians surrendered to the city of Syracuse.
Parked the car (paid parking: in September 2020 we paid 3.50 Euros for the whole day) the path crosses a rather messy farm where mainly goats and sheep are raised. after the short common stretch, the path allows you to make a circular route. There are two well-marked entrances: path A (on the left) and path B (on the right). Those who want to take a short tour of the reserve will go to the right, gradually descending into the canyon (The B pathway is a shorter but also steeper route, more exposed and less shady). Those who, on the other hand, want to make the complete circuit of the path, will continue straight on for another 5-600 meters at the crossroads. At the bottom, a wooden gate and a sign indicate the beginning of Path A and the descent into the canyon through a beautiful staircase carved into the rock, this was our choice for the first part of the excursion. After the staircase, Path A passes an old dam (the Prisa dam) no longer in use and continues to the right on a dirt path, flat, not wide but comfortable enough, which runs alongside the river and runs under the trees. almost completely in the cool shade of these, particularly appreciated in summer. Arriving at the pools that the river created in the rock, we returned following path B (backwards therefore), as mentioned more exposed, sunny, and steep (nothing difficult anyway), but with very beautiful sceneries, and a path overlooking the Cassibile pools from above. Still following path B, just before the last stretch (see Waypoint shown on the GPS track) a deviation to the left on a well-marked path allows you to reach the Scala Cruci and the main lakes. The path is open, but a sign warns in huge letters of the danger of landslides and how the Scala Cruci path is currently closed and not maintained by the forest (closure dating back to the 2014 Fire). After this deviation, you face the last stretch of the climb, before returning to the common section of the route and then to the car.
