Hranice is a town that is definitely worth a visit. This city walk is based on a description available from the local tourist information, located in the hall of the castle. The non-available Dutch version can be found via the link.

Hranice (in German called Mährisch Weisskirchen) is a city with a rich history, many valuable monuments and beautiful nature. Within the area of ​​the Protected Cityscape you can visit the Renaissance Palace with the unique arcade gallery. The route is indicated by the blue marking of the Association of Czech Walking Tourists, fifteen sights along the route are provided with information plaques. Additional information is supplied by means of some information panels, with the aid of texts and photographs.

In the immediate vicinity of the old town are the deepest ravine of the Czech Republic, the acreage of the famous Austro-Hungarian Army institutes, the pilgrimage site Kostelíček, the railway viaducts (an important technical monument from the 19th century), the lookout tower Stará Radnice and many other attractive places.

Het kasteel van Hranice

The castle of Hranice is mentioned for the first time in writings from 1398, the present slot is step by step step originated during the period from the 15th to at the beginning of the 17th century. Worth seeing are special the courtyard, with a renaissance arcade gallery, and the stucco decorations on the ceilings of the first floor. The natural stone main defense wall was erected shortly after 1430, the front wall then turned on the beginning of the 16th century. The defenses include further three city gates and many small, semi-circular bastions, those at distances of forty to seventy meters apart around the entire city. Twelve of these bastions are at least partially preserved to date.

This building in Moorish-Byzantine style was created in 1863 after a design by Franz Macher at the location, where previously an old synagogue from the 17th century was. Until 1940 there were Jewish religious ceremonies place, from 1943 here are the exhibitions of the urban museum (nowadays the gallery). In the building with house no. 728, for the synagogue, it was autonomous board of the Jewish community.

Market square with the church of the Beheading of St. John the Baptist (kostel Stětí sv. Jana Křtitele). The construction of this late Baroque church took place in the years 1754-1763, after a design of the FA Grimm project, the inauguration of the church took place on 24 June 1764. In the nave one main altar and four side altars were housed, in the chapel of the Sorrowful Mother of God is another altar. The oldest clock dates from the year 1499 and weighs 1.68 tons.

The arboretum of the forestry school. The building of the forestry school, with a neo-baroque façade, was opened in 1896. At the same time, the foundation was laid for the arboretum, which played a role in the education of the pupils. The author of the original design was František Thomayer. Today the arboretum has an area of ​​3.07 ha and is open to the public.

House with Renaissance sgraffito decorations. The sgraffito decorations from the building with house no. 265 date from 1583. They were made by the painter and alchemist Jan Červenka († 1587). Today only small remains of the original decorations can still be seen, generally ornamental details.

The Jewish cemetery. This cemetery of the Jewish community of Hranice originated in the thirties of the 17th century. The oldest surviving gravestone dates from the year 5445 (ie 1684 or 1685 of the Christian era). In 1989 a large part of the cemetery was demolished, but in 1994 the cemetery was reopened in a reconstructed state. The key to the cemetery is available at the tourist office.

The lime tree of Gallaš. This small-leaved lime tree has a trunk circumference of 310 cm at chest height, a total height of about 12 m and an extraordinarily powerful crown. The age of the tree is estimated at about 170 years. In 1968 the tree was declared a protected natural element.

The evangelical prayer house. In the 16th century a prayer house was built by the Evangelical Brotherhood on this location, which was destroyed during the Thirty Years War (1618-1648). On the foundations of this house of prayer arose in 1668 the church of St. Sebastian and St. Roch, which was abolished in 1786, after which the church building served as a salt warehouse. From 1924 there is again a prayer house here from the Czech Evangelical Brotherhood.
