Itinerary description

This walk enables bondholders to explore the vicinity of Lucker. This time the route follows the Waren Burn in the opposite direction as you head for the neighbouring village of Warenford with its attractive White Swan Inn.

Although you may not see so much of the burn, you cross it four times. Unfortunately, the footpaths around Lucker have fallen into disuse over the years and, depending on the time of year, you may find some of the field edges and tracks somewhat overgrown. The road to Warenford (to the right of the war memorial) provides a shorter return route (B) than walking through the fields. Alternatively, it could also be used for a short stroll, although care needs to be taken with the traffic.

1. From Lucker Hall turn right and follow the road past St Hilda’s Church and cross the Waren Burn for the first time. After about ¼ mile you reach a fingerpost on the right, “Warenford 1½”.

2. Cross the rather steep stone stile (there are gateways both before and after the stile!) and walk diagonally left across the field to the corner where there is a gate.

3. Go through the gate into the first of five fields. You need to follow the edge of these fields, with the trees on your right, for about 1¼ miles. The Waren Burn is not visible but you may hear it!

4. The next gate you go through is at the end of the third field. The path continues ahead cutting off the right-hand corner of the fourth field before bearing right to reach a wide gap in a fence (The longer route (a) returns to this point).

5. Go through the gap into the fifth and final field. Continue along the field edge following the tree-line.

6. At the bottom corner of the field, turn right to go through a wide gate and cross a footbridge over the Waren Burn. Walk up the broad green track to meet a road where you have a choice of routes.

7 (b). For the shorter route, turn right and follow the road back to Lucker Hall in 1¼ miles. As this narrow and undulating road links Lucker and Warenford, it may be slightly busier than other local roads, so due care is needed. However, depending on the time of day, you may wish to visit the welcoming White Swan Inn at Warenford. In this case you would need to turn left, walk ¼ mile and then return to this junction.

7 (a). However, for the longer route, turn left and follow the road to the T-junction at Warenford. Turn left and follow the road past (or visit) the welcoming White Swan Inn.

8. At the corner, where the road bears right, go straight ahead to join the old road. The path climbs gradually to the A1. Just before the road, bear left and walk along the grassy path between the bushes.

9. At a junction of paths, turn left and walk down the broad track. The sea should be visible on the horizon ahead.

10. After about ¾ mile you reach a clearing and a meeting of paths. Continue ahead along the field edge with the hedge on your left. After about 400m you reach the corner of the field. On your left, you will see the wide gap in the fence through which you passed on your outward journey (4).

11. Continue ahead and retrace your steps along the edge of the fields, with the trees on your left, back to the road and on to Lucker Hall. Click here for details on The Holiday Property Bond's fabulous Northumberland development HPB Lucker Hall
