Itinerary description
A very short walk direct from Encosta Cabo Girao to the top of the nearby hill, to familiarise with the local area. For such a short walk there is considerable ascent.
Start: From reception, walk up to the Cabo Girao viewpoint. Pass the bar/exhibition building.
1. At the road junction in a few yards turn right to rise steadily by the side of the very quiet road, heading for the communication masts on the top of the hill.
There is a picnic area to the right. The roadside woodland includes eucalyptus trees.
In about 1/4 mile look out for a concrete pathway then a few steps raking back and rising steeply on the left. Turn left here to rise to the buildings of the communications station. Follow the footpath by the side of the station to reach the trig point on the top of the ridge. This little path goes a short distance further, giving fine views along the coast, particularly over Quinta Grande to Campanário to the west.
2. Return past the communications station and head across a tarmac open area towards the modern but neglected church. Continue by the roadside, passing the church and across the top of a long steep flight of traditional ‘ox foot’ steps.* Return along the roadside to the junction (1) and HPB.
* To extend the walk descend the flight of steps. Turn right at the bottom and walk uphill along the Cabo Girao access road, with excellent views over Câmara de Lobos to Funchal.
