Itinerary description

Howth 31 August 19 (ver en Español abajo).
Howth - Shielmartin and the Cliffs.
Those who follow my walks know that I love hike through the various routes on the Hill of Howth, near Dublin. If you wish to do about 9 km and enjoy woodlands, hilltops and cliffs, this is a the walk for you. It starts and ends at the Summit Inn bar and restaurant where you can park a car. There is also a frequent bus service from Dublin to just outside the Inn. Across the road from the Summit down Windgate Rise to Waypoint 1 (Entrance). Follow the path through the heather and fern, you can go up to the Ben of Howth if you wish to see the spectacular views. On this occasion I walked on towards Shielmartin Hill. I was surprised, and delighted, to see that a new wooden boardwalk is being constructed. It is great to see that the area is being maintained and developed. Crossing the Golf Course, by the marked right of way, I then began to climb up to the top of Shielmartin Hill. Again the views are stunning. Carefully making my way down I crossed the Carrickbrack Road to the pathway down to the Cliff. The walk along the cliff is invigorating, passing many small bays and the lighthouse. From there the climb back up to the Summit Inn, where I had a lovely meal and refreshments. A very satisfying combination of different pathways and views. In general, it is a moderate walk, but some areas require care and concentration. Try it on a nice sunny day.
