Itinerary description

Begins in middle of Vista Ridge trail. We started to do the south route again which is burned area but decided to do north unburned section instead. Lovely walk along wooded ridge top, second growth forest. A couple of excellent views from the Rockpile and Owl Point. Ran out of time and daylight so did not get all the way to north trailhead (steep down hill at end meant steep uphill after turning around).

Did more strenuous south portion two years ago (sih, cvg, jbb) and flowers in meadows were spectacular.

Directions: Thirty miles and and hour and quarter from Zigzag to trailhead on decent paved and gravel roads. From Hwy 26, E Lolo Pass Road go 4.2 miles, then continue fork left on Forest Road 18 for another 6.3 miles to Lolo Pass. Turn right onto gravel Road 18 for 10. 5 miles (pavement resumes around Mazama trail road). Turn right onto Road 16 at Vista Ridge trail sign, go 5.4 miles. At broad crossroads, turn sharply right onto gravel Road 1630 for 3.6 miles (stay left at fork midway up) and reach trailhead.
