Itinerary description
Why worthwhile? Nice view of the Rheintal and Bodensee.
Starting point: Ebnit 1088m. From Dornbirn follow the sign towards Rappenlochschlucht and Ebnit [Dornbirn]. Parking space nearby the church of Ebnit.
Time: 4½ hours.
Details: Well marked route. The climb to the summit is not very difficult, but at the descend there's a short rocky part with a steel rope for protection. First through forests, then on alps to the summit.
Route description:
After an adventurous ride towards Ebnit (because of the small road and steep parts), we can park our car near the church or somewhere else in the village. From here we walk through the village towards Heumöser (concrete road). Before the last corner we go to the right into an alp, underneath a ski lift. Then the path leads us through a forest upwards (signs: Schneewaldweg, Alpe Schneewald, Staffelalpe, Kugelape, Hohe Kugel). After a while we reach the Schneewald Alpe (at about 1300m.). Please be careful: after periods of rain these alps can be very soggy!
We continue our route towards Hohe Kugel. From the Schneewald Alpe we have a clear view of the summit (see photograph). After another part through the woods, we come to a provisions road: Treietpass 1498m. From here signs leads us in a northern direction to the summit of Hohe Kugel.
After a nice break at the summit we continue in a northern direction on the Kugelgrat. Here we have to pass a short rocky part with a steel wire rope to use as a safety. Next passing the Kugel Alpe we follow signs towards Emser Hütte and Ebnit. After the Emser Hütte (1272m.) we go eastern towards Fluhereck (See signs) and Ebnit. After a quiet descend on a broad mountain path we will arrive in Ebnit near the church.
Done in 1994.
