Itinerary description
Today we drive to the bridge of McCarthy. There we take the bus to Kennicott. We stop at the end of Kennicott and walk to the visitor center. They will tell us more about the hike to the bonanzamine.
It is a day walk to the Bonanza mine. It lies at an altitude of ± 1800 m. It's a tough climb from the start and the weather is not great. It's raining very lightly and only after the tree line we arrive in better weather. We eat and drink and what to see in the distance old traces of the conveyors. High in the mist we see aglimpse of the old mine.
It goes up fast, grade of the path is above 14%. Later it becomeseven more difficult by the path that comprises of small stones and rocks. Once at the top the view is beautiful. The mine is a messbut is still standing. In 1938, now abandoned and in 2011 it still exists today. The shaft is still easily recognizable.
If you look around you it's like a moonscape. Beautiful. In a few seconds is all my shrouded in mist.
And shortly after that everything is clear. It's like the Bonanza my pretty spooky. It is already late when we go back to Kennicott.Halfway we have walkers, much too late and not dressed for this climb.
Eventually we rejoined the visitor center. Tomorrow we run the Root Glacier.
If you want to reed more about the trip to Alaska.
