Itinerary description
Hiking - The Slizza river is one of the two rivers that flow out and beyond Italy's borders.
(The other one is the Drava, Drau in German, flowing into Austria from Val Pusteria).
Near Tarvisio, the Slizza carved a gorge worth a short walk/hike. Caution with slippery wooden walkways.
Access from the area where the bronze statue stands. The monument to the Austrian Soldier was erected in 1909 by the Austrians, as the area was part of their empire until the end of WWI.
Upon exiting the gorge at the end of the trail, we found a "no access" to the gorge sign. There was no sign from the side we entered. We later learned from our host that the trail had been closed since the previous year.
The trail is not particularly dangerous except for a couple of broken wood planks on the walkway and a missing portion of rail.
The gorge is over-crossed by a steel bridge, part of the dismissed railroad that was converted into a nice cycleway (part of the Alpe-Adria).
