Itinerary description
Hiking - Out and back from Ferrere - at times also spelled Ferriere, a quaint isolated hamlet where houses are, I believe, just summer retreats. There is also a small free-access museum displaying objects and tools of common use in the bygone times.
The single-lane road from Bersezio in the Sruar of Demonte Valley is quite exposed and requires caution for there is no side protection and for incoming traffic isn't easy to deal with. Patience and luck are the key factors.
The trail takes to wide pastureland then becomes steeper to reach Colle del Ferro situated on the Italian/French border, then proceeds downhill into French territory to the Arc of Tortisse, an interesting limestone formation left from erosion. The site, and trail, overlook the Lakes of Vens and the homonym Refuge. It wasn't the case to descend and climb back but it's always a possibility.
On the way back we opted to climb the Aguille de Tortisse (Tertisse Needle) which is actually a group of isolated rock needles standing in proximity of the trail.
From Colle del Ferro, nice view north on the Oronaye Grroup and Monviso at a distance.
Drinking water at Ferrere and, last chance, at Pian Belvedere near a private (locked) bivouac. See waypoints.
