Itinerary description
This was a very long hike (35 km) because I started it from Húsafell. To make this hike shorter you can park the car at the beginning of the road F578 (next to the information panels) or by the farm Kalmanstunga (see waypoints on the map). The way along the south side of the Strútur mountain is pretty nice, with a path easy to find that goes between the mountain and the river. After some kilometers you should start turning north following the mountain´s foot. In that part the path is harder to find, although you don´t necessarily need to follow any path to continue. Finally, when you get to the northern side of the mountain you will find a 4x4 track that meets the road F578 after few kilometers. Once you get to that road, just continue all the way back to the starting point.
Notice that, because I didn’t want to pass through the farm Kalmanstunga, I bypassed it going up and down the slope next to it. This was actually a bad idea, since I needed to jump several fences and a brook. I guess it’s better just to pass through the farm, although I wander if the farmers like to see hikers walking around in their property…
Strútur mountain is surrounded by the lava field Hallmundarhraun at north, east and south. During this hike you can see beautiful lava formations, especially at the valley on the north side. Besides, in that valley there are two very famous lava caves: Víðgelmir and Surtshellir. The second one is located just few hundreds of meters from the road F578 (see waypoint on the map).
