Itinerary description
At the beginning, this hike was a bit deceiving to me. I hiked to the plateau from Poiana Țapului as my accommodation was there and upon getting to the top, I wasn't so impressed and plus, seeing all the tourist hoarding around the top was such a turn off (which is understandable as the infrastructure - gondola and road - is there to access it - in winter or otherwise). But anyway, once I was heading towards Omu peak, it was a treat to see all the valleys expand out in each direction and open up really wide providing amazing views of each valley and beyond! I loved this hike more than I expected 😁
Going up to the summit was not very difficult (it was more work avoiding all the people to be honest 😂). All the trails are good and you can find many going everywhere. So people were approaching from all directions!
The only tricky part is my way down to Buşteni. I took a barely visible and very difficult path that mostly went on the ridge of one of the valleys. This one is quite steep, barely visible at times and quite exposed in some areas. So, I'd say, go down/up this one only if you have the navigation skills, good boots, and if you have confidence in your hiking. At some point, I lost the trail so badly that I ended up in climb-down situation and it was at the border of my comfort zone. So watch that part. I took a couple of photos so you can see. Then the fun began. You have to go through so much overgrown bush (and what seemed like a never-ending raspberry field) and it's really steep so makes it quite difficult/dangerous (more so than coming up as you can barely see the path going down) to go down. I slipped a lot and fell a couple of times because of that. So take care in this path. The other part here is, after you go down to the valley floor/ravine, the trail disappeared on me and in some points just stayed on the path of the ravine/stream. It was difficult going down some rocky parts but eventually found the trail. Not very frequented and only ran into 6 people altogether 😆 But in spite of all this, it provides some gorgeous views of the two valleys next to you and some nice looking rock giants!
Towards the end of the hike, the GPS was struggling so bad that it's not even worth following the recording. Just follow a red-marked trail and will take you straight to Buşteni. I still loved the hike in spite of the people and difficulty. The views of all those wide-open valleys around you and rock formations are to die for (almost literally 😉)! So I left quite pleased!
