Itinerary description
This is an interesting wildlife area in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. Through the years a river has cut its way through the limestone or shale and created an interesting gorge similar to what you would find in nearby Watkins Glen. Parking is available at the start point.
The hike was straight up for the first 10 minutes and I found my self breathing rapidly and calve muscles were aching a bit. But the hike was well worth it with great views down to the river below and several nice vantage points. The trail has many sections that are not suitable for young kids and caution was required in several areas where loose footing and severe side sloping to the trail made movement difficult and dangerous. This would be compounded under wet or snowy conditions. The river crossing at the far eastern end of the hike (1st waypoint) was easy in December, not sure what it would be like in the spring or early summer. There were several nice spots for a break, a 360 view from the hill top (2nd waypoint), and then the descent back to the start point.
Pick a nice day, take your time in difficult areas and you will be rewarded with great views of some special topography.
