Itinerary description

High Crag via Sheepbone Rake, returning via Scale Beck.

I struggled to find the upper path in Burntness Wood so best to ignore the initial section of this route. Easier to follow the shoreline towards Gatesgarth and take a direct path up to Birkness coomb.

Sheepbone Rake is of similar steepness to the Lord’s Rake and the boulders are very loose. Keep to the sides and avoid them where possible.

Easier to gain height in the coomb and then traverse across the fell to the rock gateway.

I didn’t take the Red Pike descent as I’ve done it a few times, however, following the route on this hike it’s better to take the path down to the beck where that path splits at the 400m mark on this map rather follow the ridge.

Marking as difficult as it’s not a straight forward walking route. If you like this kind of stuff then it’s not really difficult at all.
