Itinerary description
Went today to the Gateway to Hell, other name Mt. Hekla. Started off from Reykjavik aroun 6 am and it took us about 2hrs. to drive to the place where the hiking started. Hekla has been erupting with appr. 10 years interval for the past decades and based on that, will soon erupt again. Actually we saw some steam coming from the top and the ground there was warm, but most likely that´s just normal for an active volcano. Often there´s a cloud on the summit but we were lucky, clear sky and a great view. Rather easy hiking but long and therefore categorized as moderate. One can acutally start about 1,5 km nearer to the mountain than we did and make it shorter.
