Itinerary description
You start by crossing Ilsenburg from the train station to the beginning of the trail. You'll pass by at least one bakery!
Then, the first half is a gentle slope in the forest, following the Ilse river.
The second half is boring but there's no way around it to reach the Brocken, it's the same on the other side: a steep at times concrete path, used by bicycles as well.
On the summit, you will find great sights if you're lucky with the weather (only ~60 days per year!)! But also a couple of beergartens (payment only by cash), a tourist centre with cards, books and children gadgets related to the history of the area (witches!)
We went down with the steam train: expensive but worth the experience! If you're able, we found it very exciting to stand outside between carriages rather than sitting inside! But be ready for lots of smoke, and it's better with glasses!
