(en) Combining Sliding Sands and Halemau'u Trail. You need two cars (at Halemau'u Trailhead and at the top of Haleakala) or you have to hitch at the beginning or the end. The landscape is (at least for me) incredibly impressive. Do not forget water, picnic, warm clothes, rain and sun protection - at high altitude, the weather can change very suddenly. The way is easy to the crater floor and even the nearly 1,000 meters descent were not as exhausting as I thought before. The ascent over the Halamau'u Trail is actually not difficult, but you already have some km in the legs. For the Halamau'u one should be reasonably free from giddiness. The trail is always wide enough, but the edge often goes down steeply.
(s) Combination of Sliding Sands Trail and Halemau'u. Two cars are necessary (at Halemau'u Trailhead and on the summit of Haleakala) otherwise you need to hitchhike at start or end. The landscape is amazing (at least for me). Take water, picnic, warm clothes, rain shield and sun blocker with you. Weather can change at this elevation. The way down into the crater is not difficult and so the 1,000 meter downhill was easier as I thought. Uphill on the Halamau'u is not so exhausting, but there are already a lot of kilometers in the legs. For Halamau'u you need to be free from giddiness. The way is always wide enough, but at the flank it is often steeply sloping.
