Itinerary description
A great hike that takes you up the north side of the mountain and down the east side of it. This hike starts at the Gwaneunsa trail and finishes on the Songpanak trail. Tge Gwaneumsa trail has some pretty steep sections going up, but none of which are overly difficult. Going down the Songpanak trail has much more gentle slopes. If you don't like steep sections going up, then I'd recommend starting at the Seongpanak trail and doing the hike in the opposite direction.
The hike can be done in as little as six hours for people who are very fit and don't take many breaks. For me, it took seven hours but I didn't take many breaks as the weather wasn't the greatest (blizzard up top). Normally I'd say give yourself about eight hours to finish with time for breaks and taking pictures included.
Note that you currently have to make a reservation to hike the mountain (visit visithalla.jeju.go.kr/main/main.do). They only allow limited numbers of hikers each day and you can reserve spots for up to four people. The earlier you sign up, the better as the spots fill up quite quickly. If you don't have a reservation, you will not be allowed to hike! You need to select either the Gwaneumsa or Seongpanak trail for your starting point but you can go down whichever trail you like. Note that there are cutoff times for each trail at the shelters along the way and the times vary by season. If you don't get to the shelters in time, they will not let you continue to the top of the mountain. It's always better to start early!
