Itinerary description

A great hike that will offer you the best views of the mountain and surrounding area while climbing to the top of South Korea's highest peak. This hike starts and ends at the same place and has some pretty steep sections going up, but none of which are overly difficult. If you'd like some more gentle slopes going up, then I'd recommend starting at the Seongpanak trail on the east side of the mountain and going down the Gwaneumsa trail.

The hike can be done in as little as five or six hours for people who are very fit and don't take many breaks. For me, it took seven hours but I stopped for plenty of pictures and had a 30 minute lunch at the Samgak-bong shelter.

Note that you currently have to make a reservation to hike the mountain (visit visithalla.jeju.go.kr/main/main.do). They only allow limited numbers of hikers each day and you can reserve spots for up to four people. The earlier you sign up, the better as the spots fill up quite quickly. If you don't have a reservation, you will not be allowed to hike! You need to select either the Gwaneumsa or Seongpanak trail for your starting point but you can go down whichever trail you like. Note that there are cutoff times for each trail at the shelters along the way and the times vary by season. If you don't get to the shelters in time, they will not let you continue to the top of the mountain. It's always better to start early!
