Begin your hike at the parking spot off road 1. Follow the sheep path along the river further into the valley. You will cross many rivers and see a waterfall on the way. The climb to Trippaskál begins at the rock formation. Climb up into the bowl and search for the bones. They are covered in snow most of the year but visible around late August.
The bones are remains from 26 horses that fell off a cliff in the fall of 1870. On a foggy fall afternoon, two farmers from Öxnadalur were fed up with a stallion from Skagafjördur invading his land, so they drove the group of horses far up into Grjótrádalur and over the mountain pass, where no horse has gone before. They horses in the fog were scared and running fast. They fell off the cliff, for they didn’t see where they were going. Whether this was the intention of the men or not will never be known.
The path continues over the top of the mountain pass into Grjótádalur. Continue downhill until you reach the river and follow the path along the side of the canyon. You will reach route 1 after a few kilometres. Be mindful of closing all gates behind you and only bring your dog if he is trained or on a leash as there will be sheep and horses in the area.
