March held on Sunday, August 4, 2013
NOTICE: It is understood that anyone who wants to do this same route assumes the responsibility that an activity entails that is not exempt from possible risks or incidents, in an environment in which common sense and circumstances can make the difference between having a good day or the opposite.
Today we take the same road that from Graskop, the most prominent town in the area, leads to the viewpoints of the Blyde River Canyon, passing the third and most spectacular viewpoint of the Tree Rondawels, or as they say on the signs they put on the road " Dree Rondawels”. The African roads, and this was not going to be less, must be taken with a certain calm, because to the traffic of cars, people and animals walking along the margins of them, we must add the one that here circulates on the left and that overtake anywhere (even with a continuous line) as long as the car in front pulls onto the shoulder, which is usually the most frequent. A few kilometers after passing said viewpoint, you can see a “Forever Resort” on the right, which you will have to enter, passing through the information center beforehand. After returning to the car, the barrier will be raised (which Africans like so much) and along the main street we will reach the third street on the right that ends a little further on at a roundabout. Here you have to leave the car and start any of the three routes they have in the area: A1 or Leopard trail, A2 or Guinea trail, or the A3 or Loerie trail. As we only had this day to walk around the area, we decided to do a combination of the three, so that the first section of just over a kilometer and a half we did it on part of the route of the A1 and A2, until we reached a crossroads to the left that signs the A3 or Leopard trail. We knew that it would be very difficult to see a leopard, although we had been told that sometimes you could see their tracks in the area. Well, we did a section of something less than a kilometer along said route, and nothing at all; although it is true that we saw a few rocky watchtowers ideal for visual control of the area of the beautiful and impressive feline, although not here, in the Kruger we were able to enjoy a good time, from the same car. After reaching a curve, which begins the ascent and returns through another area, we decided to retrace our steps, to continue along one more section in which the Guinea trail and the Loerie trail continue to coincide. What I am commenting on is easy to verify on the ground, since here they like to draw the silhouettes that indicate each type of path with different colors. In the case of the Guinea (typical and very frequent bird in South Africa) they draw the silhouette of the bird itself, while in the case of the Leopard what is drawn in yellow are the traces of the attractive feline. It goes without saying that this entire first section is quite aerial and has much more beautiful and close views, both of the Blyde Canyon, of the Kadisi River Gorge, and of course of the very protagonists of the Blyde River Canyon: “ the three Rondawels” (giant stones that nature and the passage of time have been carving, so that they end up looking like three imposing bells, which is what they are compared to here). We can also see the area where the Blyde River widens, thanks to the dam a few kilometers below, and which makes this area of the canyon navigable with a small barge, which we will use the next day. After returning from the Leopard trail and returning to the section where the Guinea and the Loerie trail meet, we will begin a steep descent that will bring us closer and closer to the Kadisi River, a tributary of the Blyde River. Shortly after arriving at Kadisi, a huge stone boat in the shape of a sofa, on a beautiful pool, seems to us the ideal place to recharge our batteries with a drink. It's about 1:00 p.m. and the stomach begins to speak to us. Here we spend a good time, and it is that it is so comfortable, in the shade with the sound of water and the gathering of some good friends, that time flies by. Shortly after resuming the march, along the right bank of the Kadisi, a corner to the right almost from a movie, with a beautiful and hidden waterfall and a large pool of transparent waters that invite you to bathe. Here are the photos of rigor and the time of contemplation to make the first crossing of the river; and I say the first one well since we will still have to cross it four or five more times, all of them very funny, though, without getting wet and with lots of laughter and balance. It is the dry season, but we imagine that this beautiful route in the rainy season must be almost impracticable. A little less than half a kilometer from the waterfall, we reach the intersection of the A1 or Guinea trail with the A2 Loerie trail. Although our intention is to go up the gorge of the Kadisi River, we want to check on the ground the direction and layout of the Guinea, something that with a hundred meters of kicking it allows us to get an idea that it goes up the opposite slope from which we have come down, it gets further and further from the river and that it is more exposed to the sun, being less fun, and although easier, also less beautiful than the Loerie or Kadisi river gorge. Going up here slightly shortens the total distance, but nevertheless slows down our pace quite a bit, as the march becomes more careful, with some other steps in which we have to pay a little attention. It should be noted that there is a slightly aerial step on the edge of Kadisi itself, through a rocky area (without major complications, doing it carefully) and a couple of climbs, which do not require special skills or abilities to overcome them. Despite all this, this section of the Kadisi climb is not highly recommended for doing it with small children. This stretch of just over a kilometer and a half takes us more than twice the time that would have been normal, but in return the Kadisi River has been stripping us bare and offering corners of great beauty; hence, part of the time spent we have used to take a lot of photos. Around 3 p.m. when we go out again to the first stretch of road, very close to the roundabout where we have the car parked. The four of us got into the car with the feeling that we had done one of the most beautiful hikes that could be done through the Blyde River Canyon, and with the feeling that although the road was not very conducive to doing it with children, nevertheless we we have enjoyed it as if we were small children.
