Itinerary description
GTE (Grande Traversata dell'Elba) is a beautiful hike that crosses the whole Isola d'Elba. Stunning views, forests, flowers and seasights are a common denominator for the three days
Few remarks:
- Generally well labeled in both ways with "GTE"
- No fountains, be sure to have plenty of water
- Ferries can cancel their schedule quite often, be sure to check them at the official site.
- At the start of November the weather was very good (but windy). Be sure to be prepared for every weather since there could be severe hot, cold, wind, humidity, ...
- If you're doing this in low-season, beware that most (>80%) of restaurants and bars are closed.
- It's generally a mountain hike, there are small passages and (very) few technical difficulties in the beginning of the first day, and in the last day near Mt. Capanne.
- day1 and day3 are easy/medium mountain hikes. Day2 is much more easy, and to my personal taste, a little boring compared to the other two. If you just have two days, do the day1 and day3 only.
- the roads are shared with downhillers
The first day is a nice mountain hike with stunning views. No relevant technical difficulties, be sure to stop for great photos! The path is extremely well labeled. You'll have to leave the GTE as soon as you see labels for Portoazzurro. Beware the last section to Portoazzurro (route 210) is not well maintained.
