Itinerary description
Day One of a two day hike in the Cosby section of the Great Smoky Mountains. The challenging part of this hike is Gunter Fork Trail. Over the four miles of this trail, there were 11 different stream crossings, with the first being the biggest. For us, this was a knee deep crossing, but could become more trouble during times of heavy rain. Gunter Fork Trail is also a rather steep climb, and not a well maintained trail, with a lot of erosion and sketchy areas. Overall, one of the more challenging sections of trail we've done in the Smokies so far!
Cosby Campground - Low Gap Trail - Big Creek Trail - Camel Gap Trail - Gunter Fork Trail - Balsam Mountain Trail - Laurel Gap Shelter
11.87 miles, 4695 foot elevation gain
