Itinerary description
We stayed at Boplaas Guest Farm during all our hiking explorations in the area in December 2023. The road down Gamkaskloof was in a terrible condition. High clearance 4x4 vehicles are recomended. In some places the gravel road was entirely washed away, necessitating some driving through the field. From the top of the Swartberg Pass to Fonteinplaas took us more than 4 hours due to the poor condition of the road. Aside from the poor road, Gamkaskloof is definitly a wonderful wild place to visit.
You will pass a security gate on your way to Boplaas. Arange with the owner at Boplaas priorly for the code of the security gate.
In the absence of Cape Nature at Gamkaskloof, a permit for this hike is not needed any more. The trail is not kept in a good condition on the first section of the hike, but it is a short lovely hike that can be ended well with a cold beer and a tasty pie at Fonteinplaas Guest Farm.
