Itinerary description
Shortish but delightful walk on the outskirts of Rhenen, with easy parking options along Veerweg; either the car park near the entrance of the Palmerswaard area or near restaurant Moeke along the waters of Nederrijn.
The tip is to enjoy the walk fully by taking your time to look around and take in the beautiful surroundings of the Palmerswaard floodplain area, with ponds, meadows, lots of flowers and extensive views, with the Cunera church tower dominating the area.
After passing the informative info panel set up by Utrechts Landschap, you start off by following white-capped poles. At a certain point you leave this magnificent area behind you, by going straight ahead instead of turning left. The path takes you to a gate, goes a little uphill to land on the side of the N225 road. Here you cross the road and enter De Tangh estate.
Walking up you see the white mansion appear, and while walking below it you can enjoy extensive views across the river Nederrijn towards De Betwuwe / Gelderland.
Although private property, access to De Tangh gardens is possible and takes you to Stadsbossen Rhenen. This walk then crosses Autoweg twice to have a look at Leemkuil, and possibly take a short break on the picknick bench to enjoy the tranquil waterpond with waterlillies. The track circles back to the N225 road again and then continues along the signposted walk with the white-capped poles.
Towards the end, you can access a small beach along Nederrijn if you like, before returning to your car or you can visit a restaurant for a drink.
NB Update
Unfortunately, as of October 2020 this track cannot be done anymore, due to the fact that the Tangh estate doesn't allow access to their grounds anymore on this side of their estate.
An alternative to reach Stadsbossen Rhenen is to turn right on N225 and walk along the cycle path until you see Berkenweg on your left hand side. This is just a short detour.
