NOTICE: It is understood that anyone who wants to do this same route assumes the responsibility that an activity entails that is not exempt from possible risks or incidents, in an environment in which common sense and circumstances can make the difference between having a good day or the opposite.
After having made the tour of Kilauea in the morning, we took advantage of the hours of light that we had left to go to the south of the island of Hawaii and take a walk along one of the most emblematic beaches of the island, the “Green Sand Beach”. or green sand beach, product of the amount of olivine it has and that was produced by volcanic processes. The car is left on an esplanade of land prepared for such use. The almost constant and crushing wind will accompany us throughout the entire walk, and we are at the southern end of the island and a few wind generators warn us of the exposure to wind in this entire area. The walk is quite pleasant and runs along a series of sandy tracks, parallel to the beach without any difficulty. The only difficulty occurs once you reach the beach itself, and that is that to access it you have to go down a somewhat steep and slippery embankment, which if done carefully, should not be too difficult. Bathing in this entire area is discouraged, due to the strong currents and its danger, but the same thing happens in many other areas of the Hawaiian Islands. My advice would be to only swim or snorkel in those areas or beaches recommended for this activity, and not risk it in a Pacific that, although it receives us with an ideal water temperature, nevertheless seems to be more designed for practice of surfing than for swimming or diving. The eight kilometers of the round trip are done without major problems and leave room to sit for a long time to enjoy the beauty of this beautiful corner, one of the many that we discovered on the three islands that we visited.
