Itinerary description
Just outside of Bridgeport California is a gravel road that leads into Green Creek Canyon. Along the way is Dynamo Pond which is the site of the world's first long distance electrical power transmission line. Electricity was generated at the pond using hydro-power and transmitted 13 miles to the mining town of Bodie California way back in the 19th century. The remains of the dam are still visible. In late September the aspen trees begin to change colors in the canyon and there are many photo opportunities along the road leading to the trailhead to Green Lake. There are also plenty of dispersed camping spots along the way. The trailhead starts at the end of the road in Green Creek Canyon and leads into the Hoover Wilderness. The trail is easy to follow and has a gentle incline as it climbs its way into into the Hoover Wilderness Area. A spur trail near Green Lake leads much farther up in elevation to West Lake which is very pretty and secluded. The trail is open to hikers, horses, and dogs. Overnight campers can get a free wilderness permit at the Bridgeport Ranger Station. Yosemite Park is adjacent to the Hoover.
