Greece, Thessaloniki: Old City walk

Een wandeling door de Kastro-wijk, in de rust en de bijna landelijke atmosfeer van de smalle, steile steegjes, langs de middeleeuwse stadsmuren en de Byzantijnse kerken tussen de in Macedonische stijl gebouwde huizen.

A walk through the Kastro district, in the quiet and almost rural atmosphere of the steep, narrow alleys, along the medieval city walls and Byzantine churches in between the Macedonian style houses.

We lieten onze auto achter op een open stukje grond aan de Antheonstraat nabij de citadel. Hier, op het hoogste punt van de oude stad, werd de Eptapirgio citadel gebouwd. Een in een grootstad onverwacht stukje braakland waarop zelfs enkele geiten grazen, scheidt ons nog van de citadel.

We left our car in a small (unofficial) parking lot at the Antheonstreet near the citadel. Here, at the highest point of the old town, the Eptapirgio citadel was built. We crossed an - in this metropolis rather unexpected - piece of wasteland on which even a few goats graze, to reach the citadel.

In het Eptapirgio worden we met een minder fraai stukje van de recente Griekse geschiedenis geconfronteerd: tot in 1989 was dit een gevangenis en tijdens het kolonelsregime 1967-1974 werd er ook gefolterd. Men kan het binnenhof bezoeken en wat rondkijken, maar nergens worden de voorvallen van tijdens de Junta-tijd geduid.

In the Eptapirgio we faced a less attractive part of recent Greek history: until 1989 this was a prison and during the military regime (1967 to 1974) it was a place of torture. One can visit the courtyard and look around, but nowhere we were informed about the events during the Junta.

Van de Kastra-ingang gaan we omlaag naar de Platia Anargion en langs de vrij moderne kerk Agio Anargiri. Enkele stappen achter de stadspoort naar links brengen ons naar de voet van de Trigonios toren, vanwaar er een mooi uitzicht is over de benedenstad. We gaan terug naar de platia en volgen de paden door de groen begroeide strook langs de gekanteelde stadsmuur tot op een klein pleintje, waar we door een wat hoger gelegen poortje in de muur gaan en een zeer eenvoudige, bijna armelijke wijk doorkruisen naar Taverne Makedoniko.

From the Kastra entrance we descent to the Platia Anargion to visit the fairly modern church Agio Anargiri. A few steps to the left, behind the citygate, takes us to the foot of the Trigonios tower, from where there is a beautiful view over downtown Thessaloniki. Back to the platia, we follow the path through the lush green strip along the crenellated city walls to a small square, where we pass through a slightly elevated gate in the Kastro-wall and traverse a very humble district up to taverne Makedoniko.

Hier verlaten we de Kastro-wijk en gaan omlaag door de Odos Palamidou. We doorkruisen de kleine steegjes tot we het goed verstopt gelegen oude kerkje Osios David vinden. Het kerkje uit de 5de eeuw staat aan een bebloemd terras en is zeker een bezoekje waard vanwege de goed bewaarde vroeg-christelijke mozaïken.

Here we leave the Kastro district and go down through the Odos Palamidou. We traversed the small alleys until we found the well-hidden ancient church Osios David. The little church dates from the 5th century and stands along a flowered terrace. It is well worth a visit for its well-preserved early-Christian mosaics.

We verlaten het kerk-terras langs de oostzijde en gaan onmiddellijk rechts omlaag. De Epimenidou-straat brengt ons langs oude en nieuwere woonhuizen in traditionele stijl. Epimenidou gaat over in Myronos-straat: we dalen de trappen af naar de Odos Kyrinaiou en de Odos Akropoleos, die we links omhoog gaan. Na 100m zien we rechts de aan de Aartsengel gewijde tweedelige Taxiarchon kerk. De ingang aan de bovenzijde is meestal afgesloten, maar langs linksom de Moreos-straat af en dan rechts het steegje in komen we aan de achteringang, die meestal heel de dag open is voor pelgrims.

We leave the church patio at its east side and go immediately to the right downwards. The Epimenidou-street brings us along older and more recent houses built in traditional style. Epimenidou turns into Myronos Street: we descended the stairs to the Kyrinaiou Odos and Odos Akropoleos, we went to the left uphill. After 100m we saw to the right the two-part Taxiarchon church, dedicated to the Archangel. The entrance at the top is usually closed, but going down to the left, along Moreos Street and then right into the alley, we found the back entrance which is usually all day open to pilgrims.

We gaan terug linksaf door het Mousonsteegje, door de Kirkis en Leotychidou straatjes omlaag naar Amfitryonis en Odos Irodotou waar we de Byzantijnse Agios Nikolaos Orfanos vinden. Het kerkje met zijn goed bewaarde oude fresco's staat in een mooi en rustig tuintje.

We went back left through the Mouson-alley, downhill Kirkis and Leotychidou-streets to Amfitryonis and Odos Irodotou where we found in a quit garden the Byzantine Agios Nikolaos Orfanos church. The church has well preserved 700 year old frescoes.

Terug naar links door de Odos Irodotou, linksaf door de Odos Athinas gaan we rechtsaf door de Apostolou Pavlou terug naar de benedenstad, waar we op de hoek met de drukke Agiou Dimitriou straat nog voorbij het geboortehuis van Kemal Ataturk komen.

Back to the left through the Odos Irodotou and to the left down the Odos Athinas we went to the right in Apostolou Pavlou street back to the lower town. At the corner of the busy street Agiou Dimitriou, we passed by the house where Kemal Ataturk was born.

We volgden de drukke Agiou Dimitriou even naar links en gaan aan het kruispunt links omhoog langs het kerkhof. Voorbij het kerkhof, links van de ingang van het ziekenuis, komen we weer aan de oude stadsmuren. Het pad door de brede grasberm langs de muren brengt ons omhoog naar de oude stad. Boven, vooraan in de Leoforos Ochi-straat konden we nog even op een van de (dure) terrasjes verpozen voordat we via de Athanasiou Diakou straat verder omhoog klommen naar de Eleftheriou Venizelou en de Eleftheriou Venizelou-straat die we naar rechts volgden, terug naar onze auto aan de Antheon.

Follow the busy Agiou Dimitriou street a short bit to the left. At the intersection go left uphill along the cemetery. Beyond the cemetery, to the left of the entrance to the hospital, we were back at the old city walls. The path through the wide grassy roadside along the walls will take you uphill back to the old town. At the beginning of the Leoforos Ochi-street we lingered a will at one of the (rather expensive) cafe terraces before climbing further up to the Athanasiou Diakou and the Eleftheriou Venizelou streets, which we followed to the right, back to our car at the Antheon.
