Itinerary description
With your visit to Mount Athos, the Autonomous Monastic State of Christianity and Orthodoxy, you will experience a landscape of incomparable natural beauty, the peninsula with the tall Mount Athos standing and distinguish on its edge, the lacy beaches and bays with imposing "Arsanas" are the ports of the Monasteries.
When you walk through the twenty Monasteries, Ηermitages and other Small town of Mount Athos, you will walk through the woods and untouched dense vegetation in the old cobblestone streets and paths, you admire the architecture of the fortified medieval monastery castles with the towering towers that blend harmoniously with the natural environment. In general, you will find a lively museum of art and history, admiring the Byzantine style of all the buildings, the rare frescoes, the sacred icons, the woodcuts and the marble template of the churches that have been the great craftsmen of hagiography and sculpture.
Also in this place you will meet the Monks who are its permanent inhabitants.
On the peninsula of Athos, the Monks have been living away from the rest of the world for over a thousand years ascetic life in the monasteries and Hermitages. They are persons who have abandoned the worldly and for the sake of Orthodoxy, have devoted their lives to Christ and the Virgin Mary.
For the entire area of Mount Athos, the "Avaton" (abode) is one of the oldest and strict regime of Mount Athos. That is, it is forbidden on the peninsula, the entrance of women and all kinds of females. But it has historically been proven that this regime has been done with great respectable acceptance by women.
The particular route I am presenting here is not difficult for the visitor.
Basically, it follows the old cobblestone path that connects the monastery "Iveron" with the monastery "Koutloumousios" and "Karyes".
On our way we will meet the junction where we must go to go to the cell "Panagouda" where St. Paisius lived. After the cell we follow another path that leads us to a cement road, higher than the old cobblestone path.
From this point walking in the west direction very soon we will reach our destination.
