Itinerary description
After spending the night at the Refugio Vittorio Emanuelle II and waking up at 3:45 to a typical mountain hut breakfast we begin the ascent in dark, pitch black if it weren't for our headlights. We turn left following the creek but we miss the split on the trail and end up on a slightly more technical path going through an icy section, through what used to be the old route through the glacier.
Then the ascent continued over the ridges until we reached the junction back with the more common modern way. A little further up one can finally see the peak which lay hidden until now. Fortunately, we are among the first to get there and so avoid the long queues that form at the top.
On our way down we take the "proper" path through the glacier but spice up our descending by going down more directly instead of going all the way around the cliff.
Back on the plains and with full sunlight, the walk back to the hut was almost as if in the park.
