Itinerary description
A true treasure of a hike through the Gradac River Gorge.
The trail takes you from the Celije Monastery, up to the fly fishing area and then back to a little ethno restaurant (where we had a lunch of trout caught straight from the river). You can also buy flour here, milled from their traditional on-site water mill.
If you're in a hurry you can start at the monastery car park and also skip this first bit because it's after the restaurant that the real fun begins with countless crossings of the Gradac river. You can just hike in the river for some stretches. Why get out?
This is a good hike to do in September, when the river is low and the air temperature is still warm/hot.
Remember to bring shoes that can get wet and shoes you can change into. Be prepared for water that will mostly be below the knees but may at times reach your thighs.
If you go on a weekend in summer it will be crowded, so better to go on a weekday or wait until September.
If you go in late spring or early summer, or after big storms, the water can be very high. For that you might want to take a guide or take walking poles for stabilisation and extra care when crossing the river. Remember going sideways will give you stability in deep/stronger flowing parts.
The trail itself will change as the river flow changes. That is the nature of this hike.
Be careful also for hornets. I have seen more hornets on this hike than any other hike I have done in Serbia. Trust me, the stings are extremely painful...
But do not let that stop you from doing this beautiful hike!

This takes you Celije Monastery. I forgot to take photos. You can also start the hike at the monastery carpark if you prefer. There is a relic of a saint's skeleton inside.
