Itinerary description
GR10
The first quarter section of the GR10(260km)
Had the intention of walking to half way point ..to Luchon, but hurt my shin on a rock and had Horse fly bite on the same place..swollen foot, so had to stop..will continue as soon .
Such an amazing walk , that has been planed for a while..the route i took was basically following a GPX file on my device..easy to follow and the way markers are clear.
I made two mistakes..one i missed the small turning right at the bridge just before Bidarray and lost Gps signal in the woods..
Second mistake after arriving at the Gorge de Kakouetta , i turned right on the D113 following the GR10 trail, where i should have turned left to find supplies at a shop few km down the road.Adding a few tiresome kms to the walk
The Basque region is mainly over grassy hills and fern tracks, a few steep at time but nothing to difficult..
I carried all for tent ,sleeping and cooking, also because of the Covid problem , i carried at least 3 days food at all times as some of the small shops were shut, not knowing where to re supply was an issue..so a loaded pack at all times..including 3 lts water ..
Although water can be found all on the trail as long as you have a water filter system or tablets...
The only section , as noted in most books is the pass from Bidarray to St Etienne de Baigorry no water for most of the section, not untill near the bottom, on a hot day , carry as much as you can, steep climbs.
Lost GPS as end of the trail..big thunder /electrical storm on the decent from col d, Ayous.
After arriving at Etsaut i took a rest for two days to give my leg a chance to repair..but after another long day, was time to stop..next time.!!
