Gormanstown to Balbriggan, Ireland

We went by the public bus 101 from Tolbot Street, Dublin City to the Gormanstown bus stop beside the Huntsman Pub. We walked up Flemington Road and then onto Gormanstown Road, from where we entered the Gormanstown Castle grounds. A castle on these grounds date back to 1372, but the present Castle was built in 1786 by Sir Jenico Preston, 12th Viscount Gormanstown. This family live here for many centuries and a legend has it that each time a head of the family was dying, foxes collect at the door of the castle because the original Viscount protected the fox on his land. We first visited a very large Elm Tree which is said to be over 400 years old. From there we large Bell in the Court Yard. and then we walked through part of the forest, along in front of the main Castle building to visit the Crucifixion, the statue celebrating the 800 anniversary of the birth of St Francis, and then to the Cloister. This is yew walk, a foliage enclosed area in the form of a Cloister that dates back some hundreds of years (there is another interesting story which recounts that the Lord of the Castle had this cloister formed from yew trees for his daughter who wished to enter a convent). We then visited the graveyard with the tombstones of the members of the order who died in the college. Here we had our lunch. We left the college grounds by a side gate (normally you would use the Main Gate, but this was closed for School holidays), onto Flemington Road and we walked down to the Main Gate of the College where we took a road to the left until we arrived at the old Dublin Belfast road. We crossed the Devlin Bridge and took a path to the right of the river to reach the beach. We walked along the beach and the coast line until we reached Balbriggan. We passed the Haunted House, the Sailors Grave (don't forget to put a stone on this grave when you pass ... it is a tradition), the Martello Defense Tower, and the Football grounds before reaching the town. We took the Train service back to Dublin. This is a nice easy walk with varying landscapes, and nice sea views.

Fuimos en el autobús de transporte publico 101 desde la Calle de Tolbot, Dublin hasta la parada en Gormanstown en frente del Huntsman Pub. Cogimos la carretera de Flemington hasta llegar a la de Gormanstown, desde donde entramos en los jardines del Castillo de Gormanstown, ahora un colegio de los Franciscanos. Ha habido un castillo en este sitio desde 1372, pero el Lord Jenico Preston, 12 Vizconde de Gormanstown construyo el presente castillo en el año 1786. . La familia vivieron aquí durante muchos siglos y hay una leyenda que cuenta que cuando el cabeza de familia estaba muriendo los zorros de la finca vinieron a la puerta a velar porque el original Lord siempre ha protegido los zorros en sus terrenos. Hemos pasado por un Olmo que dicen que tiene 400 años. Desde ahí fuimos a ver una campana enorme en el patio entre los dormitorios. Luego pasamos por la puerto principal del Castillo en camino a ver al Crucifijo, la estatua de San Francisco que marca el 800 aniversario de su nacimiento, y el Claustro que dicen que tiene cientos de años. (hay otro leyenda que dice que el Lord del Castillo mando plantar este Claustro para su hija que querría ingresar en un convento). Fuimos al cementerio donde están enterrados los miembros de la comunidad. Aquí comimos el bocadillo. Después de descansar retomamos el paseo, saliendo por una verja de servicio del Colegio (normalmente se usa la Entrada principal, pero estaba cerrado por ser vacaciones escolares). Anduvimos por Flemington hasta llegar a la Entrada principal del Colegio donde tomamos la carretera a la izquierda hasta llegar a la antigua carretera de Dublín a Belfast. Cruzamos el Puente sobre el Río Devlin, tomando el camino a la derecha, hasta llegar a la playa. Caminamos parte de la ruta por playa y parte por la orilla hasta llegar al pueblo de Balbriggan. Pasamos por la Casa Encantada, la tumba del Marinero (no te olvides de la tradición de poner una piedra en la tumba), una torre Martello de defensa litoral en los tiempos pasados, y un campo de fútbol. En Balbriggan cogimos el tren devuelto a Dublín. Es una ruta muy interesante, con muchas variaciones de paisaje, y vistas del mar.
