Itinerary description
Technical difficulty: 1.5/5
Note #1: Weather if fickle in the Slovenian Alps. Mornings are usually sunnier, and cloud cover starts coming in at noon. Check the weather forecats beforehand: https://www.hike.uno/mountain/kahlkogel_golica/11/252
Note #2: The best time to visit the grassy peak of Golica is in May or early June, because its slopes are full of blooming daffodils (narcissus). This is a well known fact, so the trail gets kind of crowded on weekends. We only saw a few people when visiting on a workday.
Note #3: The unpaved gravel road up to the parking spot is in good condition and passable for normal cars. There are a few bumps which aren't readily visible, so exercise caution and drive slowly.
Note #4: Parking at our starting point was free of charge, but limited in space (fir for about 4-5 cars). You can also arrive by car to sedlo Suha (eng. Suha pass) which has more available space, and is currently also free. We heard rumors from the locals that entry to the mountain and the parking may be paid in the near future.
--
This is a technically easy, but physically moderate trail due to the elevation gain.
It starts just outside of "Markljev rovt", then goes into the woods for a short while, before emerging on the unpaved road just before the sedlo Suha. This is where you branch off upwards towards Golica peak, right at the edge of the Slovenian-Austrian border.
The terrain is not demanding and doesn't require any special equipment. It's children-friendly. However, the descend from sedlo Suha to the peak is steep, so younger children may have some difficulty going up.
If you managed to visit Golica in May or early June, you should be greeted by slopes of white, blooming daffodils. The peak itself offers a beautiful view towards the western Karawanks and part of Julian Alps (with Triglav), as well as the Drava and Wörthersee in Austria.
Make sure to bring ample sun protection because the ascent from the pass to the peak is without shade. There also aren't any streams with potable water until the very last quarter of the trail.
Waypoints
Car park / Markljev rovt
Parking just outside Markljev rovt. Toll-free at the time of writing, although limited in space. About 4-5 cars can fit here comfortably. Alternately, you can continue on the same road and park somewhere at the side of the road between here and the last intersection on the trail.
Intersection #2 / Sedlo Suha / Monument to fallen WWII partisan
The interesection at the Suha pass, where the ascent to Golica truly begins.
Intersection #4 / continue on the right-hand path
We went left here, just to take a few pictures on the daffodil slopes. If you continue on the left-hand path you will arrive straight at the Golica mountain lodge (slo. Koča na Golici) and you will MISS the peak. To reach the peak, you must continue upwards on the right-hand path at this intersection.
Electric gate
Electric gate for sheep, which are also prominent on the slopes. Crossing the gate you should also cross the national border into Austria. You will return to this gate on your way back from Golica.
Golica (1835m)
Golica peak, aka Kahlkogel in German. Grassy peak, plenty of space to sit down and rest, with beautiful views on both the Austrian and Slovenian side.
Intersection #5 / to 'Koča na Golici'
Continue towards the Golica mountain lodge (slo. Koča na Golici). The ascent is a bit steeper, but not technically difficult.
Golica Mountain Lodge (slo. Koča na Golici)
The lodge offers food and refreshments, located at 1582m. From the lodge, you will descend by rounding the right corner of the lodge and then continuing further down, again on a more steeper descent.
Intersection #6 / to 'Planina pod Golico'
Continue LEFT towards the Planina pod Golico (eng. Pasture under Golica). The alternate way STRAIGHT is known as "zimska pot" (eng. winter path) and should take you to the same place.
Intersection #7 / to 'Planina pod Golico'
Continue towards the "Planina pod Golico"; don't go on the "čez sedlo Suha" variant, because that will take you back towards to Suha pass.
Intersection #8 / go left
Go left on the intersection, continue on the unpaved road for about 2.5km to arrive back to the parking lot.
