This is the NINTH (A) stage of the 13 that correspond to this trek we do in Gokyo: Lukla, Phakding, Namche Bazar (2), Dole, Machhermo (2), Gokyo (2), Machhermo, Phortse, Tengboche, Namche Bazar and Lukla back. October 2022.
This is the first part of the Ninth stage of the trek: we climb to the top of Gokyo Ri. Once below the town again, we will start the return to Machhermo.
This stage will only be done by 9 of the 10 members of the group, as a colleague is not in a suitable physical condition to accompany us.
ACCESS : From the village of Gokyo.
DESCRIPTION OF THE ROUTE: We leave at 4 in the morning (like most) with the headlights on, as it is still pitch black.
Once we cross the stream that feeds the lake in front of the town, the first ramps of the ascent to the summit begin. They are only 600m of difference in level, but they go up from the first step.
The first ramps are the most pronounced and cost the most to pick up the pace.
From 5000m we find some snow, but it does not imply any additional difficulty: the path is very clear, clean and marked. The only problem is the climb to this height.
In less than 3 hours the whole team has reached the top. During the climb it became clear, the fog moved between us and we even got a bit of the snow that falls on the next peak, but as we got up the view was getting better. We reached the top with a rather grateful view of the whole environment.
We were able to enjoy half an hour at the top of Gokyo Ri (5357m) with views even of Everest, with a good cap of clouds and the brightly lit Cho Oyu, enough to have the extraordinary feeling of the magical world that they are these huge mountains. From up here we still have higher ones, but also lakes and glaciers at our feet.
We start the descent as cautiously as we went up. But very happy.
We arrive at the lodge where breakfast awaits us and the descent to a good rest in Machhermo.
