-- Phortse (3810m) - Tengboche (3860m)--

This is the ELEVENTH stage of the 13 that correspond to this trek that we do in Gokyo: Lukla, Phakding, Namche Bazar (2), Dole, Machhermo (2), Gokyo (2), Machhermo, Phortse, Tengboche, Namche Bazar and Lukla in our way back. October 2022.

Short but intense stage, both for the way and for the weather that will accompany us all day.

ACCESS : From Phortse to the monastery in Tengboche.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION: We leave the village of Phortse on the path of the upper part of the village and head north, under heavy rain.

The path continues a sustained diagonal descent towards the Imja Khola river which carries the waters of the Everest area and will pour them into the Dudh Koshi Nadi just below, at the point of Mong.

A landslide on the way complicates the route and we have to improvise a passage in the middle of the forest, also the yaks who oppose it for a long time.

An iron bridge crosses the Imja Khola River and immediately the path climbs, winding and relentless, to the top of the hill where Tengboche, its well-known monastery and the very busy route to Everest Base Camp is located.

The ascent was long and painful under incessant rain along a straight and muddy path. We arrived at the top rather untidy. Luckily the lodge was already waiting for us with the stove ready.

After lunch we had a visit to the Tengboche monastery to attend a prayer ceremony. This Buddhist monastery is the largest in the Khumbu region. It was built in 1916, destroyed by an earthquake in 1934, rebuilt, destroyed again in 1989 and rebuilt again with international aid. It is currently a popular place to visit for hikers who travel along this popular trail as it is located in a privileged spot with a view of the summit of Everest, Lhotse and AmaDablam in front of it.

We attended the prayer ceremony, for half an hour, with 9 monks and a handful of tourists who, like us, were respectfully sitting, barefoot, on a mattress on the floor. A small visit to the local images completes the session.

At the start of the visit to the monastery, it has stopped raining and the fog is moving and lifting until we can see, to the surprise of all the tourists present, both the AmaDablan, directly above us, as well as the Lhotse and the 'Everest.

Tomorrow we start on the way back to Namche Bazar and it looks like we can have a good day with the views we haven't had so far.
