Itinerary description

This hike will bring you to the highest point in the Kathmandu Valley (2791m). You can either take a hiking trail (like I did) or walk on the longer vehicle mud road. The latter is less challenging, but longer and less rewarding. When I reached the top, the view was mostly obstructed by clouds, but what I could see was beautiful. Certainly worth the otherwise mediocre trail to it. It's easy enough to reach this trail by taking a public mini bus to Godawari bus stop from Lagankhel bus park in Patan (just ask around there). From Godawari bus stop you'll only have to walk a couple of hundred meters to the entrance (100rp). After another 100-200 meters turn left (just before a temple) to reach the pedestrian trail.

Can we follow your hike gpx and hike by ourselves?

We plan to hike on Saturday, do you think there would be other people on the trail ?

Could we get any local guide there to accompany us ?

  • Schwansz Nov 29, 2022

The hike is very straightforward, so you won't need a guide in my opinion. When I was there there weren't any guides at the park entrance.

I encountered relative few people on the trail (around 10 I think). On the peak there's a military post and a small diner. I brought my own lunch though, so I don't know what they serve.

    How was the trail ?
Was it visible clearly all the way?

I am planning on Saturday and will be travelling from Bhaktapur

  • Schwansz Nov 29, 2022

There's a hiking trail and a mud road. They will both take you to the peak, so you certainly won't get lost. However, since the hiking trail was sometimes interrupted by the road, I had to watch

...where the hiking trail continued, it was not too hard to see it, but I wasn't always visible either.

Being a Saturday I'm sure I will meet someone on the trail.

Your trail is one way recorded.
    Any reason?

    Hi Schwanz,

    1. I see that you hiked this trail last month, did you encounter leeches ?
    2. While walking through the dense forest trail section, any snakes etc ?
    3. Your trail recording is most of established trail or you explored some places offtrail ?

    Thanks

  • Schwansz Nov 30, 2022

    1. I've encountered no leeches, 2. Nor have I seen other strange animals, 3. I've not gone off trail, I only took a wrong turn once close to the top (you can see it on the GPS).

Thank you very much Schwansz. You have been of great help with your inputs.

I approached few agencies for guided tour ( its my 1st time in Nepal) and they offered full package of $60 per person Ktm to Ktm.

An avid hiker advised me that we could hike ourselves by the combination of offroad and hiking trail.

So I will follow your recording.

Will update you next Sunday !!

Happy to help and yes the hike is perfectly doable on your own, even getting there through public transport is easy. I hope you'll have a nice clear view over the Kathmandu Valley and the Himalayas. Today was a nice day with not too much smog so hopefully it will be the same or even better tomorrow. Enjoy your hike!

We have followed your trail and enjoyed this hike very much.
All the information you have provided was intricate and helped us in our hike.

I have recorded my hike in my wikiloc as 2 segments and posted it.

The views from the Summit and view points were excellent, specially the Himalayas.

Thank you very much for your wikiloc post, mentioned details and replies to my queries.

    You have been greatly helpful.

    Hi Schwansz,

Thank you very much for your advises and inputs.

We had a great hike and the sky was clear enough to get excellent views of the Himalayan peaks.

    Thank you once again.

    Hello from Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Visiting Nepal this December, want to hike phulchowki. If you please recommend me which path should I follow - the hiking trail or a mud road?
    Thank you!

Hi, my recommendation is to start with the hiking trail and see if it suits you. As you can see on the map the hiking trail intersects with the mud road throughout the entire way up to Pulchowki. So you can choose to switch to the mud road every 5 or 10 minutes.
