Itinerary description
A great hike, but do at your own risk!
This was my first time hiking in this area. It is a lovely part of Serbia, and judging from the lack of other hikers or trail markers, it is not visited that often. Ljutken peak itself has one of the most impressive markers in Serbia, which looks fairly new, so people do come, just not so many...
We were following another user's trail on wikiloc from the start point to the peak. This is definitely the harder part of the trail and you can make this hike easier, although less varied, if you just start at the end point and go from the lake to the peak and back. So we abandoned that trail at the peak and made our own way back to the lake along farm trails and seldom used roads.
Why was it hard? Once you get off the village paths at the beginning of the hike the whole way to the peak, there is barely any trail. You get a sense in most places of a faint path, but elsewhere there is nothing. We were hiking in July, so there was more grass and undergrowth. It's not complete bush bashing but be prepared to be slow in this section.
We also changed course a bit from the trail we were following, but that user hadn't put in one vital piece of information. Part of the area you hike through after leaving the village of Bzenice appears to be a police training area. There were no fences or signs telling us not to go there and we met a farmer who was also walking through the middle of the area with his cow and he said it was totally fine to be there, but still, it felt a bit not okay and obviously it would be a bad thing to be there when any training is going on, as they obviously do target shooting...
So now you are warned. The hike itself has a good mix of scenery, from village/remote farms, to open fields, pine and oak forest etc - there are great views along the hike and you can hear the birds of prey, meet farmers etc.
Enjoy - if you dare!
