Itinerary description
This is a circular tour a mile to the west out of the pretty village of Goathland. There is very limited (3 cars) parking at the start, which is just before Hunt House is reached.
The tour follows the tarmac road past Hunt House and Wheeldale Lodge where it joins a footpath. There are then some stepping stones to negotiate before the path climbs up the hillside giving fine views over the moors. Eventually, the old Roman Road is met and followed. It can be definitely recognised as a road, but it is difficult to get a photograph to do it justice.
Finally, you turn off the road and leave the moor through a gate and join Wheeldale Road, which is relatively quiet and enables rapid progress.
The road is left by way of a footbridge and the route then follows alongside a beck entering Hazel Head Woods as it does so. This stretch is very pleasant and a nice contrast to the open moorland. The road is left and the way is then by a field that leads to a ford and a bridleway back to where the tour started.
It is worth pointing out that Nelly Ayre Foss (waterfall) can be visited en-route. Parking is just by the road and the return trip is a mere kilometre.
