Itinerary description
This is a short circular tour near Goathland that combines wonderful views over open moorland, pretty stream-crossings and the North Yorks Moors Railway, with its tracks, trains and bridges.
The actual length and time of the tour is less than what is shown as I forgot my camera so had to return to get it. You really need one to capture the beauty of the spot known as Bishop’s Bridge.
There is on-road car-parking at the start, though it is limited: the bay I used had space for just three cars. However, there is more parking after the bridge (if you are travelling from Pickering) or further up the road towards Pickering.
The tour starts on a surfaced road but after a mile or so forks off to the right.
Just after a gate there is what is for me the highlight of the tour: Bishop’s Bridge, which is basically large rocks strategically placed so that you can cross Brocka Beck. The trees here had to the charm of this place.
After Partridge Hall Bungalow, the route joins another surfaced road that crosses Little Beck.
Near Ellars Farm, there is a sharp left hand turn going across a field that leads towards Abbot’s House. This part of the route can get very muddy and slippery. Before the farm, there is a small footbridge consisting of a stone slab crossing a small beck.
The route continues under a rail bridge of the NYMR – a good spot to get a close-up of the trains.
Where the road comes to a crossroads, the left-hand fork is taken. This was the bed of the old rail route to Goathland and makes for easy going to the main road and so on back to the parking spot.
