Route from Goat Island Beach to the Mirador halfway from Cape Rodney, making the route known as the Goat Island Bay Walkway, which passes through the Leigh Marine Laboratory and a viewpoint in the middle of the route, being the path of return the same as the one way.
The route begins at the parking lot near the Goat Island Beach, where there is a Maori sculpture representing a warrior of one of the tribes. Rescinding the beach you will reach the Leigh Marine Laboratory, owned by the University of Auckland, and is responsible for studying Leigh Marine Reserve, the oldest and most famous in New Zealand. The Goat Island Bay Walkway itself begins at this laboratory, and it quickly climbs up until, from the viewpoint located halfway, it offers a magnificent view of the Goat Island (Te Hāwere-a-maki) and the whole marine reserve The route ends at the final viewpoint, with a bench to sit, and from where you can see the same Goat Island and the marine reserve, as well as the land that extends towards Cape Rodney. You can also see cows grazing peacefully in the extensive meadow that is located on the right side of the road.
The return is made exactly in the same way, since the route is very simple and the intention is to enjoy good views of the marine reserve.
It is a very short route, with a very low difference, and that does not allow the possibility of losing itself. However, the views offered by the Goat Island and the marine reserve are very beautiful, and the possibility of taking a dip when finishing the route to see the marine fauna of the reserve is highly recommended. Everywhere there are posters with information about this fauna, and some of the animals can be seen without needing to dive. There is even the possibility to reach swimming to the Goat Island, which is also a matter of study at the University of Auckland.
